9/20/11 0990, 1220 & 1221
1220 Thinking about the essay you picked, write a one paragraph summary of the essay. Also, choose three quotes from the essay you chose to include in your work. Final drafts are due Tuesday, September 27th. They should be typed, 1 inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font. You should have a cover page following the APA guideliness in the Longman Handbook. If you produce another rough draft and would like to conference over it, I remind you that I am in the food court on Mondays from noon to 2:30, and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:45 to 3:30
o990 Read and be prepared to discuss "On Being 17, Bright and Unable to Read" by David Raymond beginning on page 51 in Language and Awareness.
1221 Working with your questions, you are to write a down, dirty fast rough draft of the paper you intend to write. It won't be collected or graded but you should produce at least three pages of text addressing your question.

Read Chapter 4 in "Writing Arguments." Following Carmen's plan for Part of an Argument, (p. 67) consider the questiontion you formulated in class and create a plan for the details of your argument. Nothing in this exercise is written in stone; you can change it later. Just organize your thoughts regarding your question in terms Toulmins Schema. (p. 62)

Today we talked about writing for an audience. Imagine that there is a new reality TV show called "My New Best Friend." We are all auditioning for a position on the show. Each week, the winner of the friendship awared will be granted immunity and the looser will be kicked off the show. There are two hosts, Bubba and Belinda and the goal is to be their New Best Friend. Your essay is your chance to qualify for an audition for the show. I handed back the rough drafts and part of your homwork is to revise and rewrite the essay for Monday. Your essay must be typed, double spaced, with 1 inch margins all around with 12 pt type in Times New Roman font. No cutsey fonts. There should be a title page. The title of the essay is, "I'm Bubba and Belinda's New Best Friend."
If you missed class today you will have to work without the benefit of comments on the rough draft. There is no actual length requirement but your essay should contain an introduction, body and conclusion. This is a graded second draft essay.
Also for homework read in Language and Awareness: "Shitty First Drafts" pages 112-116. Think about the critical reading questions.
